Join us in honoring the memory of Sister Julie Hyer, OP
June 23, 1948 - July 27, 2022
Sister Julie was the President of Dominican Hospital from 1985 to 2007, the tenth Adrian Dominican Sister to lead the hospital. The hospital flourished under her leadership in countless ways.
During her tenure and oversight, Dominican opened the level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), opened its first cardiac catheterization laboratory in 1988, welcomed the open heart surgery program in 1990 and brought the first MRI to the community. Sister Julie oversaw the purchase of a former hospital on Frederick Street and developed new programs there, including the Acute Rehab Unit (ARU) and pediatric outpatient clinic. She guided Dominican Hospital in joining Catholic Healthcare West, predecessor to Dignity Health, and now CommonSpirit Health. Sister Julie spearheaded the building of Dominican Oaks in conjunction with the Dominican Hospital Foundation, expanded the hospital's emergency department to its current location and oversaw the construction of the Adrian Annex administrative office building.
As the hospital president, Sister Julie was known for her sharp business acumen, forthright nature and quick wit. Truly, she shaped the landscape of healthcare here in Santa Cruz and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
