Course Description:

This 1 day course will focus on the adult hemiplegic upper extremity, and will provide you with an increased understanding of how hemiplegia alters the normal biomechanics of the shoulder complex. Participants will learn how to assess and increase ROM of the shoulder complex, forearm and hand. They will learn how to increase support function of the UE by utilizing muscle re education techniques and how to increase challenge to the UE as it relates to function. The course will include lecture and lab time to practice skills on each other. Participants will be able to apply this information in acute care, acute rehab , long term rehab and home environments.

Goals and Learning Objectives

  • Gain an appreciation of how the normal biomechanics of the shoulder girdle are altered by hemiplegia. 
  • Increase ROM of the hemiplegic shoulder complex, soft tissue and have influence over pain and subluxation. 
  • Understand how impairments from hemiplegia can influence the functional use of the upper extremity. 
  • Increase use of the involved UE in active support during function.
